and to dump 40 million people to wait in the energy ro emergency room. let's look at the some of the latest polling in the wake of wednesday's debate. this afternoon pew released a poll that showed a dramatic shift toward romney. this poll covers the four days sibts the debate and it has romney pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other polyp that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, edi

feel mitt romney dominated by bringing more energy to it. how did you see it? >> well, i think the president has always had a certain dignified reserve and i think that's one of the admirable qualities about the president. as i was watching the debate i think what mitt romney really needed tonight was a big game changer. he needed to address the observation that he hasn't had any specifics for all of these great promises. you know, $5 trillion in cuts but it won't add to the deficit, trust me i'll tell you later. eat cake, lose weight. so i don't think he got the game changer he needed tonight. i do think the president was particularly strong, though, in getting governor romney to admit that he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the president was good in drawing the contrast between the two economic approaches, the two economic plans. governor romney believes that tax cuts for the wealthy grow jobs. most of us understand that those sorts of tax cuts are what grow deficits. they don't grow jobs. and president obama and his opportunity economy, i
presidents combined. and when mr. romney suggested that half of the green energy companies given stimulus funds had failed, that's only true in 3 is half of about 30. there was that sense also, that the president just didn't really want to be there. it was hard to get a fierce sense of urgency from the president on wednesday night. yes, it did look bad. all the rope-a-dope wednesday morning metaphors couldn't have changed how bad it looked. there is one thing you could say about the first debate, its with a good old-fashioned policy debate, one that had each candidate offering complications recitations of policy and policy consequences. >> i'm concerned the path we're on has been unsuccessful. the president has a view, similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago, a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will, trickle-down government would work. that's not the right answer for america. >> the approach that governor romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. and we ended up with the slowest job growth in 50 years
on foreign oil by increasing our domestic production incentivizing clean energy to create jobs and put people back to work, those aren't goals, those are plans to continue to move this economy forward. look, i also hope that mitt romney will take some of the time paul ryan didn't want to take in his interview this weekend and try to explain the arithmetic behind their budget. paul ryan said it would take too long to explain their budget plan. the problem isn't the time and explanation. it's the math that's involved to make the statements that mitt romney and paul ryan have said line up to being anything close to the truth. and i think that governor romney will likely whether he likes it or not have an opportunity to try to explain how you pay for a $5 trillion tax cut for the wealthy, and not have it end up as every study has shown raising taxes on middle-class families. >> they've come up wait new study today where they say i think with what you could call dynamic scoring, that tax reform will produce economic growth if you want to prebutt that. >> well, you know, andrea, you and i both have

at a live picture of the president who is on stage in madison, wisconsin. he looks fairly full of energy to me. he appears to be hard-working. what would you say, sir, to mr. sununu? >> i would say to mr. sununu he doesn't know what he's talking about. i have worked with the president over the last four years who has given his blood, sweat, and tears to turn this economy around, and i think he's done a very good job of that and he's still got a lot of work to do. and the fact is that this president because of people like mr. sununu in the republican party, republicans have done every single thing in their power to stop this president from accomplishing what he's accomplished. but he's accomplished more, martin, in his three years and eight months than most presidents do in eight years. so i think mr. sununu needs to take those words back, as we say in the congress. i think it's very unfortunate for somebody to be saying that about this president who has done a great job. >> mr. romney said last night he wants to sit down with democrats and work out a solution to health care and so on. wh
